Alison Williams – Biography
AUSTRALIAN ART – ARTIST – CULTURAL HERITAGE SPOKESPERSON - COMMUNITY
“I am a proud Gumbaynggirr woman, and have had a love of painting and drawing from a young age as a way of expression of my personal impressions, dreams and experiences. Born in Sydney in 1968, I grew up around Wollongong. However, I always harboured a feeling of belonging to my mother’s country, the area surrounding Grafton, NSW of the Gumbaynggirr. This feeling brought me to the Northern Rivers regions of NSW, to settle there, establishing my studio and to continue my artistic development. Creating roots within the community to teach, develop my own artistic experiences and to raise a family.”
Alison has taught for many years in the Clarence & Coffs regions and has won several art awards including the NSW Indigenous Art Fellowship from the ministry for the Arts and Sydney City Council which supported her to exhibit throughout Canada. Alison manages the WADJAR gallery at Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre working to support Indigenous art and artists on the North & Mid North Coast, and to promote cultural awareness for all.
